When shopping for a set of summer tires for my BMW x1, I was looking for a balance between performance, treadwear and bad weather drivability. So I picked up a set of the new BF Goodrich G-Force Sport Comp-2, and I have to say, this tire instantly transformed my car by introducing a level of confidence in steering response and grip that I hadn’t experienced with any of my previous tires.
As a performance buff, I always want to try and get the most out of my car and push it to the limit. More speed and more control equals more fun and a better driving experience. Which the Comp-2 delivers on all fronts by introducing racing technology to the street.
I immediately noticed a difference compared to my old Michellin tires.
The new silica-infused compound glues your car to the road for sharp steering, responsive handling and superior wet and dry grip.
The aggressive tread pattern ensures traction is always there, even in bad weather. In the rain these tires are superb and keep me feeling safe. The thread design’s shoulder grooves and wide circumferential rain channels inspire nothing but confidence in bad weather. And the resistance to hydroplanning is excellent. Not for a second was I worried about my car slipping, spinning out or losing grip.
The Comp-2 is a wide tire with plenty of surface contact and is surprisingly comfortable for a performance tire. The ETEC System ( Equal Tension Containment System) gives you more control of your car by keeping more thread surface on the road. The stopping power is truly fantastic and generates more traction at speed and in hard cornering.
The stiff sidewall inserts give great responsiveness for powerful steering so you hit the corner harder with more accurate precision. And provides you with stability and balance for quick changes in direction.
So what’s the catch?
The only major drawback is that they can be quite noisy at speeds of under 50mph, especially on the highway. Unfortunately my engine isn’t loud enough to drown out the loud persistent humming, which can be frustrating on long journeys.
As far as treadwear is concerned, they seem to be wearing quickly but evenly. Although I do have a bit of a heavy foot and tear through tires quickly.
However, be warned, these tires don’t perform well in the cold and can take a long time to warm up. Got to test them once in the snow and they’re terrible, which I suppose is to be expected from a summer tire.
Overall, the Comp-2 makes for a great tire that doesn’t want to let go of the road. If you’re on a budget but still want performance, these are a bargain.
Everything just feels easier with these tires on my car.
Steering, accelerating, braking, driving in the rain. They’re simply great tires if you’re looking for something grippy and responsive without sacrificing bad weather drivability. Delivering real value for money with their quality, reliability and durability.
