Having dedicated winter and summer tires is a must for any driving enthusiast. In the winter, you need a tire that can provide secure traction on wet, snow and slush covered road surfaces.

The SP Winter Sport 4D is a tire developed by Dunlop. Designed for the drivers of sport cars, coupes and sedans, it’s suitable for mild winters. It offers high class traction and short braking distances on snow and ice. It’s also featured on our list of best winter tires.

Winter Performance

The Dunlop SP Winter Sport 4D is designed to excel in the rain and has particularly good cornering grip in wet conditions. To achieve high levels of grip on wet surfaces and in cold temperatures, the SP Winter Sport 4D features Dunlop’s motorsport derived silica-plus tread compound that’s molded into a directional tread design.

The tread design utilizes long V-shaped grooves to fight off hydroplaning for consistent traction and handling on wet and slush covered roads. Any water is evacuated quickly and efficiently away from the tread’s footprint.

In order to increase grip in snow and ice, the tire combines a 3D sipe system with new transversal sipes. This increase the number of biting edges in contact with the road. Result is impressive handling, traction and braking in light to moderate snow. That being said, deep snow will present some problems as the tire can struggle clearing itself out.

Dry Performance

On dry pavement, steering is responsive and communicates a good feel for the road with snappy braking. The Dunlop SP WInter Sport 4D features an interlocking mechanism on its sipe system. So under braking and heavy cornering, the blocks lock together to give you greater control and feel for the road. They hold onto dry roads tightly and give plenty of warning before breaking loose.

The SP winter Sport 4D’s road manners are superb. They’re very smooth and amazingly quiet on the highway. On top of that they deliver incredible road feedback and an enhanced steering feel for unrivalled levels of comfort. And thanks to two steel belts that are reinforced by Dunlop’s Jointless Band the SD Winter Sport 4D remains stable and comfortable at all speeds.

Overall

Dunlop SP Winter Sport 4D is a very balanced winter tire with few weaknesses. It’s highly suitable for mild winters and no matter the weather, remains firm with excellent driving precision. The SP Winter Sport 4D is designed to enhance safety and provide the feedback needed to give the driver confidence in a wide range of winter condition.

It is available in sizes ranging from 15 to 21 inches and speed ratings of T, H and V. The sidewall is branded with the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol. This demonstrates that the tire has met the industry’s severe snow service requirements.
